In the 2010 MLB Draft, the Mets chose UCLA RHP Erik Goeddel in the 24th round, 722nd overall.

Goedell was an interesting pick in 2010.  The Mets signed him with a bonus that was believed to be near $500,000.  He had Tommy John surgery in 2007 and was a highly recruited pitcher coming out of high school.  He was committed to going to UCLA and it was believed that it would take a signing bonus in the $1M range to sign him out of high school.  Had he returned to UCLA, where he pitched in the 2010 College World Series instead of signing with the Mets, he could have been a potential first round pick with a good season.  The Mets managed to sign him.

After signing with the team, Goedell made one appearance with the Gulf Coast League Mets in August 2010, pitching one inning, allowing a hit, strike out , and not allowing a run.

In 2011, he reported to the Savannah Sand Gnats (A) of the South Atlantic League and made 15 appearances (13 starts) as well as a brief three start stint with the Gulf Coast League Mets between July 22nd and August 1st after a stint on the disabled list with a shoulder injury.  On the season, he recorded a record of  3-5 with a 3.24 ERA in 18 games (16 starts), pitching 77 2/3 innings, allowing 63 hits, walking 24 and striking out 69 with a WHIP of 1.12.

In 2012, the right hander moved up one level to the Port St. Lucie Mets (A+) of the Florida State League and appeared in 22 games (20 starts) with a record of 5-6 and an ERA of 3.41.  He threw 108 1/3 innings, allowing 110 hits, walking 43 and striking out 98 with a WHIP of 1.41.

Goeddel’s progress through the system continued in 2013, as he was promoted to the Binghamton Mets (AA) of the Eastern League where he recorded a 9-7 with an ERA of 4.37.  He appeared in 25 games with 25 starts, pitching 134 innings, allowing 135 hits, walking 58, and striking out 125 with a WHIP of 1.44.

With Binghamton in 2013, he was 2nd on the team in starts, 2nd in innings pitched, 2nd in wins and 2nd in strikeouts.

To date, his minor league stat line consists of 66 games (61 starts) with a record of 17-18 an an ERA of 3.76.  He’s pitched 321 innings, allowing 309 hits, walking 125 and striking out 293 with a WHIP of 1.35.

We’ll see how Goedell will continue to progress through the system.  He was added to the 40 man roster on November 20, 2013.  Given the investment the team has made in him, he’ll certainly be given the opportunity to show he belongs in the bigs.
