Colorado Springs 9, Las Vegas 7

In a day in which the major league squad staged an incredible Father’s Day walk-off win, the Las Vegas 51s were unable to put together quite the comeback as they fell to Colorado Springs by a score of 9-7.

Chris Schwinden took the hill looking to get back on track after a pair of poor outings earlier in the month. Instead, his rough patch continued as the 26-year old went five frames allowing five runs on nine hits while walking one and fanning three, taking a lucky no-decision. After a scoreless four frames, the wheels came off for Schwinden in the fifth as he allowed a five-spot, leading to an early exit. Back-to-back homers by Charlie Culberson and Ben Paulsen to lead things off and set the ton for the inning. Later on in the inning after Charlie Blackmon drove in the third Colorado run, back-to-back extra base hits by Corey Dickerson and Matt McBride to make it a five-run lead before the frame would be through.

Top-pitching prospect Drew Pomeranz for Colorado however was dominant, putting up six scoreless frames while punching out 11, also taking a no decision. It wasn’t until the bullpens got involved that things got interesting.

Down 6-0 in the bottom of the eighth, seven Vegas batters reached base, the last of which scoring on a Zach Lutz three-run shot to tie up the ballgame, in the midst of the rally, both manager Wally Backman and left fielder Eric Campbell were ejected. Campbell’s replacement, Jamie Hoffmann singled home Rylan Sandoval for the first run on the night for the 51s.

Robert Carson, pitching in his third minor league game since his demotion, allowed a three spot in the top of the ninth capped off by a two-run shot to make it a 9-6 ballgame. In the bottom half of the frame, the 51s tried to rally, but it wasn’t enough as they went on to fall by a score of 9-7

Andrew Brown also got tossed by first base umpire Stephen Barga in the ninth inning, the same ump who ejected Backman and Campbell earlier in the game.

Ike Davis went 0-for-4 with a walk and a pair of strikeouts, one of which in a big spot during the ninth inning rally. Davis is now 4-for-23 since his demotion and showing little signs of improvement.
