Gorski

Las Vegas sent lefty Darin Gorski to the mound for the second in the four game series against Sacramento Saturday night. Gorski’s season so far has been schizophrenic. He has been much better at home than on the road. He is 2-5 with an 8.83 ERA in eight away games, and 2-1 with a 2.41 ERA over six starts at home. The trend held as Gorski pitched a solid 5.2 innings of one-run ball at Cashman Field. He held the River Cats to five hits, walking three and striking out four to improve his record to 5-6. He was never in trouble until he gave up a one-out solo home run to Sacramento right fielder Darren Ford in the fifth. He allowed a double and a walk with two out, before getting out of the inning.

In the top of the 6th, first baseman Brooks Conrad was unable to handle a pop up down the right field line, trying to make an over the shoulder catch, but it fell in for a single. Gorski then walked the next batter before getting a fly ball out to center field. With Ford coming up again, manager Wally Backman called for right-hander Vic Black to finish off the inning. Black bounced a pitch, sending the runners to second and third while walking Ford on four pitches. With the bases loaded, Black was able to coax a grounder which he handled himself, making the throw to first to end the inning without any damage.

Recker

In the meantime, the Vegas offense used power to build a comfortable lead. In the bottom of the second, catcher Anthony Recker, in his ninth game since being assigned to Vegas from the Mets, singled with two outs. Center fielder Cory Vaughn then came up and hit a long home run to left center field to drive in two. Two innings later, after a one-out walk to Conrad, right fielder Travis Taijeron tripled to right to drive him in. Recker then slammed a long, line drive home run to left center to bring home Taijeron. Recker led off the seventh with his second home run of the night. Third baseman T.J. Rivera also added a solo homer to conclude the scoring.

Zack Thornton pitched a scoreless seventh allowing only an infield hit. Chase Huchingson came on to pitch the eighth and ninth. He allowed an infield single in the eighth. In the ninth Ford led off with a triple to center. But Huchingson was able to strand him at third sandwiching a walk between two strike outs to close out the game.

Recker went 4-4 with two singles and two home runs, driving in three and scoring three. Taijeron was 2-4 with a triple, RBI and run scored.
