5/3 MMN Game Recap: Dilson Has Huge Game, Smith Homers

Las Vegas 15 (13-11), El Paso 6 Box Score

There was an offensive explosion in El Paso today, with the Vegas and Home team hitting 34 hits between them as well as 21 runs scored on the day. Sean Gilmartin started, and Dilson Herrera led from the leadoff spot with two homers, and a double shy of the cycle. Four home runs were hit by Vegas in the win. You can watch his first homer and his second homer.

Gilmartin had a tough outing giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out three. This was easily his worst start of the young season, raising his ERA from 1.66 to 2.70. Zack Thornton, Josh Smoker, and Erik Goeddel all went two-thirds of an inning in succession. Thornton gave up a run, while Smoker and Goeddel did not. Jeff Walters pitched a scoreless inning to finished the game out.

The Vegas lineup on the other hand scorched, starting from the leadoff spot in Herrera, who had just returned from a sore back. Dilson showed the back wasn’t an issue, going 4 for 6 with two home runs, triple, driving in five, and scoring four times. He also stole a base, and now is up to a .288/.307/.493 line.

Brandon Nimmo came back after the day off against the lefty to record a two hit game, that included his fifth double of the year. Nimmo has gone 9 for 19 with six RBI and three walks in his last five games. T.J. Rivera continues to prove water is wet as he adds yet again another 2 for 3 game with his third home run of the year, driving in three, and walking twice. Rivera now has a nine-game hitting streak and is batting .356/.392/.575 with 19 RBI on the season.

Travis Taijeron homered as well for his fourth of the year and went 3 for 5, and two RBI. Gavin Cecchini continues to rake, adding his fourth double and three hits of his own, he is now up to .299/.393/.390 on the year. He is 13 for 22 with seven runs scored during his six-game hitting streak. Rafael Montero starts tonight in an 8:35 pm game.

Binghamton 13 (12-10), Portland 2 Box Score

Binghamton beat up on Mets former 2nd Round pick Teddy Stankiewicz for eight runs as Top first base Prospect Dominic Smith launched his third home run. Binghamton had 18 hits, including the 3-6 hitters in the lineup each recording three hits. Andrew Barbosa had a solid start, and the bullpen shut down the Red Sox’s Double-A affiliate.

Niuman Romero led the B-Mets with a 3 for 6 day, being a triple shy of the cycle, and driving in 5 of the 13 runs. Smith was also 3 for 6, with a two-run home run to left-center field, as well as two other hits with runners in scoring position. With the four RBI, Smith now has 20 on the season which is second most in the Eastern League. Watch is homer here.

Matt Oberste and Victor Cruzado also had three-hit games, with Oberste recording a double and RBI. Phillip Evans and Kyle Johnson both collected a double on two hits, while Colton Plaia drove in two with his two hits. Evans came on to replace Derrik Gibson after he was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning.

On the pitching side, Barbosa gave up two runs, one earned on three hits and three walks while striking out four. The tall lefty now has a 2.82 ERA on the year and has struck out 25 batters in 22.1 innings.

Logan Taylor continues to excel in the relief role, striking out three and allowing two hits and a walk in two scoreless innings. Luis Mateo pitched a scoreless inning, and is on a roll with four straight scoreless relief appearances. David Roseboom contributed his third scoreless appearance in a row, striking out two in his frame. Tyler Pill takes the ball tonight against the Portland Sea Dogs.

Bradenton 5, St. Lucie 1 (14-11) Box Score

St. Lucie had a rough game as they couldn’t score more than a run against the Marauders despite eight hits. Chris Flexen had another poor performance. Wuilmer Becerra continues to beat up on Florida State League Pitching.

Flexen started and did well until he ran into trouble in the fourth inning, giving up three runs on a two-run triple and a single. In the sixth inning, he gave up a home run. In 5.1 innings, he allowed 8 hits and walked 3, and struck out 5, while taking his fourth loss, and growing his ERA to 4.26. Kevin McGowan gave up another run that was unearned on his own throwing error but struck out two and lowered his season ERA to 1.23. Ben Griset chipped in a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.

Wuilmer Becerra drove in the only run in his 2 for 4 day and is batting .400 on the year so far. He has returned back to right field nine games after he’s returned to the lineup. Amed Rosario was the one who scored the run after he singled in his 1 for 4 day. Kevin Taylor had a 2 for 2 day, with a double and two walks. Champ Stuart went 2 for 3 with a triple and his ninth stolen base. Jonathan Johnson had a hit out of the leadoff spot.
