The Mets made two minor league signings over the weekend — Anthony Seratelli and Joel Carreno. Both players have received an invitation to Spring Training, so they’re worth keeping an eye on. Adam Rubin helped provide a little background on both of these guys…

“Joel Carreno has really solid stuff — a four-seam fastball at 89-92 mph with a slight cut, average sinker at 88-90 mph,” said a baseball person familiar with his Blue Jays career. “He has a really solid slider, but has a tendency to overuse it, especially with runners in scoring position. He’s a good competitor, can play a multitude of roles out of the bullpen.”

The switch-hitting Seratelli should have a shot to make the Mets’ bench in 2014.

In two seasons in Triple-A, he has produced a.286 average, .385 on-base percentage, 28 homers and 107 RBIs in 784 at-bats. He also stole 39 bases in 44 attempts during that two-season span. ”

Seratelli is an ideal utility player — with pop in his bat, the ability to hit from both sides of the plate, and the ability to play multiple positions. As far as it goes for Carreno, I don’t foresee him making the bullpen with the Mets right out of the gate considering all of our options, but he’s certainly a solid depth piece and will do fine in Triple-A.

These weren’t crazy attractive signings, but they could pay off. The problem is — these type of deals work better for teams that are close to competing… so we’re still looking for that big signing or trade in Flushing.
