The Mets have signed journeyman starter Aaron Harang to a minor league deal. He will report to Triple-A Las Vegas. Harang, 35, had a 5.76 ERA with 6.5 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9 in 22 starts this season. The Dodgers traded Harang early in the season to the Colorado Rockies — who flipped him to the Seattle Mariners. The New York Mets will be his fourth organization in 2013 alone.

The 6’7” right-hander has pitched for 12 years in the MLB, with a career record of 110-115 and a 4.29 ERA. He recently found success in San Diego (14-7, 3.64 ERA) and Los Angeles (10-10, 3.61 ERA) in ’11 and ’12 respectively.

Thoughts from Matt M.:

This is obviously another roster filler for Las Vegas’ playoff push later this week. Even though Sandy Alderson said September call-ups will happen once the postseason is done, Wally Backman‘s club has been a revolving door between Cashman Field and Flushing this season. The fact that he’s been able to get his team to the playoffs this year is amazing. He’s now won some sort of championship as a player or a coach at every level — from the Independent League all the way to the major leagues.

This guy is a winner. If he doesn’t get a chance to manage the Mets (which doesn’t look likely right now), I would be shocked if another team didn’t at least consider him for a managerial opening at the MLB level.
