Peoria Javelinas 7 – 4 Glendale Desert Dogs
Surprise Saguaros 11 – 9 Salt River Rafters
Scottsdale Scorpions 10 – 3 Mesa Solar Sox

There were plenty of fireworks last night for Scottsdale Scorpions as they jumped on Solar Sox righty Teddy Stankiewicz (Red Sox) immediately in the first inning. After a lead-off walk by second baseman Shed Long (Reds), first baseman Peter Alonso singled up the middle and then executed a double steal with Long to placed runners in scoring position for center fielder Ronnie Dawson(Astros).

Dawson would come through with an RBI single to score Long followed by another RBI single by DH Abraham Toro-Hernandez to score Alonso to give the Scorpions an early 2-0 lead. The Solar Sox would add a run in the bottom of the 1st to cut the lead to 2-1.

In the top of the second inning, shortstop Andres Gimenez would get his first at-bat of the AFL season and immediately made an impact driving an 0-2 pitch from Stankiewicz over the right field wall to give the Scorpions a 3-1 lead.

Righty Angel Duno (Athletics) would replace Stankiewicz in the top of the 3rd inning, but, the Scorpions offensive onslaught would continue thanks to back to back doubles from Alonso and Dawson to stretch the lead to 4-1. Right fielder Heath Quinn (Giants) would later add an RBI single to increase the lead to 5-1. Catcher Ali Sanchez and Gimenez would both get run scoring opportunities in the inning but both were struck out. This left the door open for Long to add a two RBI single to his register to give the Scorpions a 7-1 lead before the inning was over.

The Scorpions offense would tack on some more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Left fielder Austin Listi (Phillies) drew a lead-off walk from righty Daniel Procopio (Angels) and Alonso immediately made him pay for it by pulling a ball over the LF wall for a two-run HR to give the Scorpions a 9-1 lead.

The Scorpions would add one more run in the top of the seventh inning, thanks to four straight walks from righty Sam Sheehan (Athletics) to Sanchez, third baseman Arquimedes Gamboa (Phillies), Gimenez, and Long to score Sanchez and extend the lead to 10-1. The Solar Sox would add two runs in the bottom of the eighth but the deficit proved too much to overcome and the game ended in favor of the Scorpions 10-3.

Here’s video of the blast from Alonso and here is the homer from Gimenez.
