Scottsdale Scorpions (2-1) 8 – Salt River Rafters (1-2) 0
Box Score
C Tomas Nido 0-5, 3 K
After a big debut where he homered, Nido struggled at the plate going hitless and striking out three times. He didn’t just struggle at the plate, he also had a rare passed ball. Still, Nido did a good job handling the Scorpions pitching staff as the team pitched a four hit shutout.
2B Luis Guillorme 2-4, R, RBI
Guillorme had a great game in his Arizona Fall League debut. His third inning single sparked a two run rally which would prove more than enough in the Scorpions 8-0 victory. As impressive as he was starting off the rally, Guillorme would deliver a two out RBI in the fourth inning.
DH David Thompson 0-3, BB, K
After a strong debut with a double and and RBI, Thompson struggled out of the ninth spot of the lineup. Still, he was able to find a way on base by drawing a walk.
RHP Kyle Regnault 2.0 IP, H, BB, 4 K
The Rafters would threaten Regnault in the sixth with a Yonathan Daza two out triple, but Regnault would rebound striking out Ryan Mountcastle to end the inning. The strikeout of Mountcastle was one of four Regnault recorded in two impressive innings of work.
After the Scorpions (2-1) 8-0 victory, they are set to play the Salt River Rafters (1-2) at 6:35 P.M.
I know we as fans think it is a non brainer to add Guillorme to the 40 man roster and protect him in the Rule 5 draft, but some on this site have suggested that every club has a great glove, no hit middle infielder stashed in AA and AAA.
That may be correct, but LG seems to have a high walk rate and hits for average. He will get stronger as he gets older – is he worth exposing ?
He’s also a very good base-runner. But there’s a more to it than that.
How likely is it that someone else takes him? What are the organizational needs?
Cabrera, Reyes, and Flores will all be leaving for free agency over the next two years. Reynolds probably runs out of options and defaults to minor league free agency in that time frame, as well. Cecchini facing what could be a make-or-break season and may not be a major leaguer. Who replaces all of those IFs in that short a time frame? If you’ve got a pretty good one, you probably ought to keep him. And Guillorme certainly qualifies as pretty good, even if he’s not a stud.
