Arizona Fall League (AFL)

Mesa Solar Sox 8 – 0 Peoria Javelinas
Glendale Desert Dogs 1 – 4 Surprise Saguaros
Salt River Rafters 2 – 6 Scottsdale Scorpions

  • 1B Peter Alonso: 1 for 4, R, 2 K
  • CF Desmond Lindsay: 2 for 4, 2 R, 2 HR(2), 2 RBI(2)

Center fielder Desmond Lindsay made the most of his unexpected start yesterday. In the bottom of the second inning, with runners on first and second with no one out, Lindsay would hit a ground ball back to the pitcher Jon Duplantier (Diamondbacks) who attempted to turn a double play. But Desmond’s speed would force a rushed throw by shortstop Carter Kieboom (Nationals) which allowed a run to score and gave the Scorpions a 1-0 lead.

First baseman Peter Alonso would get in on the run scoring action in the bottom of the third inning.

After a lead-off triple by Shed Long (Reds) and a run scoring ground out by shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez (Reds), Alonso would hit a sharp line drive single to left field and advance to second base on a passed ball to the next batter. That batter, Abraham Toro-Hernandez (Astros), then drove Alonso in to score extending the Scorpions lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Lindsay scored another run for the Scorpions, this time, launching a ball the other way and over the wall for his first HR of the fall season to extend the lead to 4-0 in favor of the Scorpions.

The Rafters would score a run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead down to 4-1, but, in the bottom half of the inning, Lindsay showed off his power once again. With the bases empty, Lindsay pulled 2-1 pitch over the left field wall to extend the Scorpions lead to 5-1.

This was the first time in Lindsay’s career that he had a multiple HR game. The teams would trade runs again later in the game ending in a 6-2 victory for the Scorpions.

“I’ve been working on a new swing, so today was the first day doing it and I think it’s safe to say I liked it pretty well,” Lindsay said.

  • RF Wuilmer Becerra: 1-for-2, R, K

With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, right fielder Wuilmer Becerra got a rally started for the Navegantes with a base hit to left field. He would come around to score one batter later thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Rene Pinto.

Becerra would get another AB in the bottom of the third inning with runners on first and third with two outs, but, after four straight foul balls, he would strike out swinging against righty Alejandro Arteaga.

The game was delayed in the top of the fourth inning due to rain which persisted long enough to eventually suspend the completion of the game to another date.

Luis Carpio (Caracas), Boris Sanchez (Lara), Robert Colina (Lara), Yeizo Campos (Anzoategui), and Jose Garcia (Aragua) were all active for yesterday’s games but did not make appearances. Kenny Hernandez (Aragua), Wilker Velasquez (Margarita), Ragui Rodriguez (Caracas), and Joshua Cornielly (Caracas) have all started the season on the inactive reserves list.
