The Pacific Coast League on Thursday announced their squad for the 2014 Triple-A All-Star Game. The game is scheduled for July 16th in Durham the home of the Durham Bulls of the International League. The starters for the PCL squad were selected by fans, media, and managerial staff.
Making the team is the Las Vegas 51’s big first baseman Allan Dykstra. Dykstra who will be the designated-hitter for the PCL squad is having a very productive year for the fist place 51’s. He will be teamed up with some of the MLB’s Top 100 prospects including Joc Pederson, Arismendy Alcantara, and Jimmy Nelson. The manager for the PCL squad is Fresno’s Bob Mariano.
In 74 games in 2014, Dykstra is hitting .283. He has 65 hits this season with 31 going for extra bases. His 12 home runs puts him second on the team behind Andrew Brown, and his 56 RBI puts him in the top five in the PCL. Dykstra is on pace for his best offensive season so far in his professional career.
2014 season stats: 74 G, .283 AVG, 12 HR, 56 RBI, .427 OBP, .526 SLG, .953 OPS
I may have some favorites in the Mets minor league system, but Dykstra is one that I hope to see in the majors really soon.
Dykstra was the Eastern League Player of the Year in 2013. He has continued with a strong first half in Vegas. Could this be a case of baseball’s Leo the Late Bloomer? I hope so.
