Adam Rubin of ESPN New York confirms that minor league first baseman Allan Dykstra has suffered broken fibula in winter ball and is headed back to the U.S., likely for surgery.

Dykstra, 26, set career highs in home runs (21) and RBIs (82) and led the Eastern League in on-base percentage (.436) and walks (101).

In addition to being named the Binghamton Mets and Eastern League MVP, he was honored as the New York Mets Sterling Organizational Player.

He could miss anywhere between 6-10 weeks, but we’ll no more after surgery. Tough break…

Thoughts from David C.

What a bad break, no pun intended.  From having a great 2013 season and then tearing it up in Winter ball batting .395/.489/.526, and now having to have surgery and delay his progress is a real bummer. But if he is out only 6-10 weeks, then he should be ready for spring training and work his way back into shape. I wish Allan a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.  The only good thing I see out of this, is that he may not have been added to the 40 – man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft, but the surgery should keep him in a Mets uniform for next season.
