A couple of days ago Sandy Alderson noted Eastern League teams were beginning to pitch around Binghamton Rumble Ponies first baseman Peter Alonso.

With teams being more careful, we’ve finally seen Alonso struggle this season. Over the past 12 games, Alonso has had nine hitless games while hitting .143/.326/.229.

Here’s the thing about those numbers. Alonso has maintained a strong walk rate drawing eight walks in 46 plate appearances (17.4 percent). This speaks to Alonso having a much better approach at the plate.

With that improved approach, you knew once Alonso got pitched to hit, he was going to start slugging again. Last night, Alonso got pitches to hit.

In a game started by Mitch Keller, who is MLB Pipeline‘s top Pirates prospect and Baseball America‘s 11th best overall prospect, Alonso was 3-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Both of Alonso’s doubles came against Keller.

It’s one thing to bust out of a slump. It’s a whole other thing to bust out of a slump against one of the best prospects in the game.

This was the first time since May 11th Alonso hit a double, and it was the first time since May 15th he hit two extra base hits in a game.

Before this game. Alderson said he believed Alonso could be moving to Triple-A soon. With games like the one he just had, soon may not be soon enough.
