The Mets beat the Braves on Saturday afternoon by a 4-3 score in Port St. Lucie to kick of their 2019 Grapefruit League schedule.

A couple of the Mets top prospects, Pete Alonso and Anthony Kay, shined in the win,

Alonso, potential Mets Opening Day first baseman, showed off his best tool when he homered on the very first pitch he saw.

Alonso would also walk in his second plate appearance before Dominic Smith took over at first base. By the way, Smith looked smooth at first base and he’s in great shape yet again.

Kay, our No. 6 prospect, came into pitch the seventh inning with a two-run lead. The left-hander had runners on the corners with none out after an error and single.

The left-handed former first round pick used a terrific pick-off move to nab the runner at first and get the first out. He then used a sharp breaking ball to get a strikeout and finally a pop-up to get out of the jam.

As you can see, Kay got his fastball up to 96 and flashed a couple of plus breaking balls in his major league spring debut.

Right-handed relief prospect Eric Hanhold picked up the save with one strikeout. He threw his slider in the 87-89 mph range with a couple showing late bit.
