Baseball America released their annual Classification All-Star teams today with three New York Mets players making the cut.

BA specifies that the picks are based on performance though they do weight the player’s age and talent when deciding between two close players.

Mets prospect Peter Alonso was chosen as the designated hitter for the Double-A squad after hitting .314/.440/.573 with 12 doubles, 15 homers and 52 RBI in 65 games for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.

The 23-year-old Alonso finished the season with the Las Vegas 51s hitting .285/.295/.579 overall with 31 doubles, 36 homers and 119 RBI.

Alonso was also chosen to be Baseball America’s first baseman on their 2018 Minor League All-Star team that covers all of the minors.

Joining him on the Double-A team is Jeff McNeil as the second baseman. McNeil hit .327/.402/.626 with 16 doubles, 14 homers and 43 in 57 games with Binghamton. He had a 1.027 OPS in 31 Triple-A games before his promotion to the big leagues where he’s hit .335/.392/.484 through 48 games.

While McNeil and Alonso are certainly known among most Mets fans, the third player chose by BA – right-handed pitcher Jaison Vilera – is not. He was chosen for the Short Season team.

Vilera, 21, went 5-2 with a 1.83 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, .191 AVG against and 78 strikeouts compared to only 20 walks in 73.2 innings for the Brooklyn Cyclones. The sinkerball/changeup combo of Vilera earned him a trip to the New York-Penn League All-Star game this season.

The Mets didn’t have a player chosen for the Triple-A squad, High Class-A, Low Class-A, Rookie or the Dominican Summer League.
