Earlier in the week, the Mets designated lefty reliever Dario Alvarez for assignment. Yesterday, he was claimed by the Atlanta Braves and will report to AAA. Alvarez was ranked #35 on MMN’s Top Prospect list. Alvarez jumped up the system in 2014 from Savannah to the MLB. He had trouble with his command throughout the MLB and Vegas, but has had good strikeout numbers in the past. He possesses a 89-92 MPH fastball and an above average slider.

Alvarez is very likely never going to be more than just a lefty specialist, but if he can figure it out, he should last in the bigs for a very long time. He never had any true success in the bigs so far as he has posted a 12.60 ERA in 5 MLB innings.

With Alvarez being taken off of MLB Pipeline’s Top Prospect list, Patrick Mazeika entered the list at #29. He is #36 on MMN’s Top Prospects list. Mazeika was an 8th rounder in the 2015 draft out of Stetson, where Jacob deGrom pitched.

Mazeika had a great start to his pro career last year as he hit .354 with 5 homers in 62 games with Kingsport. He was named the Mets C0-Sterling Award winner for Kingsport along with fellow 2015 draftee Kevin Kaczmarski.

His 2016 season was delayed by an elbow strain but he hasn’t missed a beat since joining the Columbia Fireflies lineup on May 18th. He has been red hot hitting .443/.529/.519 with seven RBI and five walks in eight games. Mazeika is very deserving of being on this list and I wouldn’t argue with the number they put him at. Here’s to hoping he continues that success.
