Shortstop prospect Andres Gimenez headlines the three Mets players selected to participate in the Dominican Summer League All-Star Game that takes place on July 17th. He is joined by outfielder Edinson Valdez and left-handed pitcher Ivan Santana.
Gimenez, 17, has just 31 professional games under his belt but he has already been extremely impressive. He is hitting .360/.461/.544 with ten doubles, four triples and a home run. The left-handed hitter has also shown great patience at the plate walking 21 times compared to only 13 strikeouts. He has stolen seven out of eight bases as well.
The Mets made a splash last year on July 2nd when they signed Gimenez to a $1.2 million signing bonus. He was heralded as the best hitter coming out of the IFA group from Venezuela.
Valdez, 17, has started his professional career off by hitting .331/.392/.390 with 23 RBIs in 33 games.
Pitching out of the bullpen, Santana has gone 4-1 with a 2.25 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with 34 strikeouts in 24 innings for the DSL Mets1.
Hopefully a stateside promotion follows the All Star game. Not something that the team does often, but did so last season with Dirocie
Should be done, no reason for him to be playing over there. Can bring Santana with him too.
There’s generally no rush for a 17 year old…Gimenez won’t be 18 until September. Just let him PLAY for his first Summer…the Language and other transitions can wait.
Mike, any idea what’s wrong with Kenny Hernandez. Hadn’t appeared in a GCL game in a while.
