Keith Law of ESPN, finished off his preseason prospect coverage today as he picked his sleeper prospect for each Major League team.

For the New York Mets he chose shortstop Andres Gimenez, this is what he had to say about him:

“Other than shortstop Luis Carpio, my pick for 2016 sleeper who gets a mulligan for a year limited to just 20 games by surgery on a torn labrum is Gimenez, a true shortstop who looks like he’ll hit. Signed for $1.2 million in 2015, Gimenez is a plus defender at short now with a chance to develop into a 70 glove> He also is as an above-average runner who projects to have average power.”

Gimenez, 18, was our #9 prospect here at MMO/MMN and was also our Minor League Rookie of the Year in the Mets system. The Mets signed the international free agent in 2015 and gave him a $1.2 million signing bonus.

The left-handed hitting infielder, hit .350/.469/.523 with 20 doubles, four triples, three home runs and 13 stolen bases. He showed off excellent plate discipline during his pro debut in the Dominican Summer League with only 22 strikeouts compared to 46 walks.

Gimenez will absolutely skip the GCL Mets and could probably skip the Kingsport Mets too, and head right to the Brooklyn Cyclones to start the 2017 season. It will be interesting to see how aggressive the Mets are with the young Venezuelan whom rival GM’s where asking about on trade calls last year.
