Adam Rubin is reporting that Rick Ankiel is out with the Mets. He has been designated for assignment, and considering he was on an MLB deal with no options left, he can choose to accept the assignment to AAA or he will be released from the club.
In the meantime, Kirk Nieuwenhuis is on his way to the big league club after his recent tear with Las Vegas. Captain Kirk has ten hits in his last ten games in Vegas, which include three home runs and two doubles. Overall, he has slammed eight home runs over the span of 16 games in AAA since his demotion.
On the flip side, Ankiel struck out his last three ABs after being brought into the 20-inning affair that went on today at Citi Field. Ankiel’s average dropped to .194 with his performane today and has fallen out of favor with the Mets and their fanbase. In his last 35 ABs, he had only two hits.
The Mets never even tried Ankiel at relief pitcher. The guy has proven that he can’t hit major league pitching. His arm is still phenomenal, why not try him on the mound again? He now understands the pressure of the major leagues, maybe he can switch back.
No way. He will probably never be able to pitch again.
