Erie 4, Binghamton 2
Tyler Collins drove in three runs to lead the Erie SeaWolves past the Binghamton Mets, 4-2, on Friday evening at Jerry Uht Park in the completion of a suspended game from April 10. The B-Mets mustered just one hit after play resumed against SeaWolves pitcher Matt Crouse.
The Binghamton Mets kicked off the resumed game with a 1-0 lead. Before play was halted on April 10, Alonzo Harris punched a run-scoring, two-out single up the middle against Erie starter Patrick Cooper in the top of fourth inning. Cory Mazzoni allowed two to reach in the bottom of the fourth before rain suspended play in the middle of Collins’ at-bat.
After waiting 121 days between pitches, Collins stroked a 2-2 pitch from Greg Peavey back up the middle, plating Jamie Johnson from second to tie the game. Ramon Cabrera gave Erie the lead later in the frame with a sac fly to center.
Binghamton took advantage of a few breaks to take Mazzoni off the hook in the sixth. Rhyne Hughes chopped a grounder to second that caught the lip and bounced over Marcus Lemon‘s hit for a single. Cory Vaughn followed by grounding a potential double-play ball back to the mound. Matt Crouse fired high to second allowing both runners to advance one bag. Danny Muno cashed in and tied the game with a sac fly into foul territory down the right-field line.
Peavey posted three shutout innings before running into trouble in the eighth. A bunt single by Marcus Lemon and a pair of walks loaded the bases for Collins. With two outs, the SeaWolves left fielder stroked a two-run single into center, giving Erie a 4-2 lead.
Given a two-run advantage, Crouse (8-9) returned for the ninth and worked around a one-out walk to Darrell Ceciliani to cap his eighth victory of the season. The southpaw allowed one unearned run on one hit over 5-1/3 innings. Peavey (1-1) surrendered two runs on five hits over five innings in his first loss of the year with Binghamton.
Binghamton 7, Erie 6
The Binghamton Mets overcame two blown leads to defeat the Erie SeaWolves, 7-6, on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park. The B-Mets pounded out seven extra-base hits, including a go-ahead double by Josh Rodriguez in the sixth inning, and the bullpen combined for 2-1/3 scoreless innings in their 22nd one-run victory of the year.
Danny Muno put Binghamton on the board five pitches into the game. The B-Mets second baseman launched Kelvin Perez‘s 2-2 offering over the right-field wall for his ninth round-tripper of the season.
The SeaWolves powered back against Logan Verrett in the second. With two aboard and two outs, Brandon Douglas blasted a three-run shot over the left-center field wall. His first home run of the season with Erie gave the home team a 3-1 lead.
Muno struck again for Binghamton in the fourth. After the B-Mets loaded the bases on two walks and a single, the Californian dumped a double down the right-field line plating Travis Taijeron and Wilfredo Tovar. Xorge Carrillo nearly scored from first, but stopped at third, leaving Muno caught in a run down between second and third. Binghamton settled for two runs in the inning after Muno was tagged out and Darrell Ceciliani struck out.
The B-Mets attacked with more extra-base hits in the fifth. After Cory Vaughn was grazed by a 1-2 pitch from Perez with two outs, Rhyne Hughes blistered a go-ahead, RBI triple off the left-field wall. Reliever Will Clinard took over for Perez and promptly surrendered a two-run homer to Taijeron, kicking Binghamton’s lead to three.
The 6-3 advantage did not last past the fifth. Douglas started the frame by doubling off Verrett and scoring when Jamie Johnson dumped a single into right. Daniel Fields ended Verrett’s night and tied the game with one swing of the bat. The center fielder deposited a 3-1 pitch over the right-field wall for a two-run homer. Adam Kolarek took over and collected the final out of the inning.
Xorge Carrillo wasted little time opening Binghamton’s rebuttal and singled to start the sixth. The catcher took second after Ceciliani walked and scampered home with the go-ahead run when Rodriguez dumped a double into center.
Kolarek returned for the sixth and preserved the lead with a perfect frame. Chasen Bradford grabbed the reins in the seventh and fell into trouble early by surrendering a leadoff double to Douglas. Bradford retired pinch-hitter Marcus Lemon before handing off to Chase Huchingson.
The southpaw plunked Jamie Johnson with his first pitch, putting the potential game-winning run on base. Huchingson induced Eugenio Suarez to bounce out to third and Daniel Fields to ground out to first to end the game and secured his first career save.
Kolarek (3-3) retired all four batters he faced and struck out three in his first win since May 30. Clinard (1-3) allowed two runs on three hits over 1-1/3 innings in the losing effort.
The B-Mets (74-45) continue their four-game series against the Erie SeaWolves on Saturday at 7:05 PM. RHP Noah Syndergaard gets the nod against RHP Drew VerHagen.
