Triple-A manager Wally Backman has his team battling for the division again with the Las Vegas 51s one game out of first with a 12-8 record.

Leading the offense for Backman are shortstop Matt Reynolds who leads the team with 21 RBI already this season. While his middle infield mate, second baseman Dilson Herrera is also raking with a team leading .375 average.

Backman recently answered a few questions about his team’s hot start for Robert Brender of SNY.tv.

“Matty at shortstop, he’s a grinder. He makes all the plays, he’s not going to make that spectacular play but you can bet he’ll make all the routine plays. He’s a grinder and he grows on you.”

“Offensively, Reynolds has a good idea of what he wants to do at the plate and he’s gotten off to a great start here. For me, Matty is going to have a big future and he’s going to become an everyday player sometime.”

Through his first 19 games Reynolds is batting .333 (26-for-78) with nine doubles (team leader), a triple, two home runs, 21 RBI (team leader) and 5 stolen bases in 5 attempts.

On Monday he went 4-for-7 with two doubles, three RBI, and three runs scored while hitting safely in 4 straight games (.500, 7-for-14).

“On the other side of the base you have Dilson Herrera and I like everything about this kid that I see. He’s solid defensively but he needs to work on turning the double play… He’s adequate at turning the double play.”

“Offensively he has so much energy it lights everyone else on the diamond. He’s got power, he’s got a little speed, and I’ll make a prediction right now – I think this kid’s an All Star second baseman in the major leagues.”

Going into Tuesday’s game, Herrera was batting .373 (28-for-75) with 7 doubles, 1 HR, 10 RBI, ranking 4th in the PCL in batting average.

Herrera hit safely in 7 straight games (all multiple-hit games) from April 15-21 and batted .500 (17-for-34) over that stretch. He has 13 multiple hit games through his first 19 games played.
