In its annual list of top organizations, Baseball America has ranked the Mets as the 15th best system in all of baseball.

This is the same exact ranking the Mets had last year, which was a drop from when the Mets were ranked fourth entering the 2015 season.  Naturally, the drop from the 2015 season was largely precipitated by the promotion of Noah Syndergaard, Michael Conforto, Kevin Plawecki, and Hansel Robles during the Mets 2015 pennant winning season.

As we are well aware, the Mets have high end prospects despite the rather pedestrian ranking received by Baseball America. In fact, Amed Rosario is widely considered one of the best prospects in the game. His teammate in Binghamton, Dominic Smith, is as good a defender at first base as there is in the minor leagues.

In addition, Robert Gsellman showed true top end starter potential as he helped pitch the Mets into the postseason.

Still, the Mets farm system is much more than their best prospects.

In fact, Baseball America has named Andres Gimenez as their “High End Sleeper” prospect in the Mets farm system. As Gimenez plays in the United States for the first time this year, Baseball America anticipates he “could emerge as one of the Mets’ top prospects with his bat speed, left handed hitting ability and plus arm.”

Recently, MMN ranked Gimenez as the ninth best prospect in the Mets farm system.

Additionally, Baseball America named Corey Taylor as the Mets “Breakout Candidate.” Arguably, Taylor has already broken out as he has been a dominant closer for the past two years in the minor leagues leading to the Mets assigning him to the Arizona Fall League.  During that time, he flashed a sinker in the high 90s.

This was a factor in Baseball America’s selection of Taylor as “he’s strong and throws plenty of strikes with a heavy, mid-90s fastball that generates tons of groundballs, making him a candidate to move quickly.”

Recently, MMN ranked Taylor as the 28th best prospect in the Mets farm system.

With the Gimenezes and Taylors of the Mets farm system coupled with the Rosarios and Smiths, the Mets have a deep farm system full of high end prospects. Certainly with the sheer depth and talent of the Mets prospects, it could be argued Baseball America’s ranking could be rather low and should actually be closer to 7th best system ranking they received from Keith Law.
