Baseball America published their updated Mets Top 10 prospects on Thursday with a few surprises in the group.

Here’s their list:

  1. Ronny Mauricio – SS
  2. Francisco Alvarez – C
  3. Brett Baty – 3B
  4. Matthew Allan – RHP
  5. Andres Gimenez – SS
  6. Mark Vientos – 3B
  7. Thomas Szapucki – LHP
  8. Josh Wolf – RHP
  9. Kevin Smith – LHP
  10. David Peterson – LHP

First thing that jumps out is 17-year-old Alvarez at No. 2 after only 42 pro games. The youngster hit .312/.407/.510 with 10 doubles, seven home runs, and 26 RBI between the GCL Mets and Kingsport Mets.

All the way down to No.5 for Gimenez is too much for me even before his big bounce back in the Arizona Fall League. Gimenez, turned 21 last month, finished his regular season in Double-A Binghamton with a 105 wRC+ and played exceptional defense.

The last thing that surprised me is having Smith over fellow lefty starter Peterson. While Smith had the better statistical season in 2019 (2.79 FIP, 10.0 K/9), I still believe there’s a better chance that Peterson ends up as a major league starting pitcher.
