Baseball Prospectus just unveiled their 2013 mid-season Top 50 Prospect Rankings.
For the Mets, right-hander Noah Syndergaard checked in at No. 23, while catcher Travis d’Arnaud was ranked at No. 28. Both players of course, were acquired before the season from Toronto in the R.A. Dickey deal.
Syndergaard, recently made a sparkling debut for Double-A Binghamton on Sunday after his promotion from Advanced-A St. Lucie where he was 3-3 with a 3.11 ERA in 12 starts. The 20-year old allowed two earned runs over six innings of work and walked one while striking out seven.
D’Arnaud has missed nearly the entire season thus far and only this week has he begun to run in a pool at Port St. Lucie, after missing over two months with a fractured left foot he suffered on April 17.
There is still no timetable for his return and according to Sandy Alderson when he does return the first priority is for him to get as many Triple-A at-bats as he can, having played only a handful of games in the last calendar year.
Surprisingly, Rafael Montero did not make the cut despite a third straight dominating season that now has him at Triple-A and knocking at the door of the major leagues. For some reason, he’s gotten very little respect and attention throughout his remarkable pro career.
MMO and MMN will be rolling out our mid-season Mets Top 25 prospects later this week. Some big changes from our last list as some prospects have seen their stocks rise and fall.

Fixed it up…thanks!
Montero, Flores and Puello got robbed! All three are 22 or younger and having monster seasons!! I can’t wait for them to come up and kick ass for us and prove these know it all scouts wrong! I know they think Flores doesn’t have a position and Puello is tied to the scandle but right now, they are better than most guys in their leagues and way younger! Just because Montero doesn’t throw 98 mph they don’t like him either! Wow!! I guess it good cause no one is gonna see what hit em when these kids come up! Let’s go Mets!!!!
At this point I’ll just choose to believe BP are haters. Flores doesn’t have a position, Montero doesn’t have the physical profile, and Puello is tied to Biogenesis. I think that’s their reasoning. Forget the fact that Wilmer has always been one of the youngest in his league, and has HIT. Forget that Montero has turned into a dominant pitcher with excellent control. And forget that Biogenesis has been out since before the season; which means that Puello has probably been tested weekly.
Oh well. I hope it motivates all three of them to keep grinding. Respect earned always seems better than respect freely given.
I don’t think that leaving those players out of the Top 50 is a knock against them.
If you listen to the Baseball Prospectus Fringe Average Podcast, which features Jason Parks (the person who put together the Top 50), he spoke in depth about the Mets in the most recent episode. He raved about their system and the front office’s plan. You have to realize that every team has 5-10 really good prospects. So not making a Top 50 list isn’t necessarily a slight.
