Ben Badler of Baseball America held his weekly Hot Sheet Prospect Chat this afternoon. All of the questions he’s answered can be seen here.

Ryan from New York asked Badler who had the highest ceiling in the Mets’ farm system out of a group that includes Rafael Montero, Domingo Tapia, Jacob deGrom, and Luis Mateo.

Badler gave his opinion with the following response:

“Mateo if he can stay healthy has the highest ceiling, but Montero has the better chance to stick as a starter.”

Coincidentally enough, Mateo was activated off Binghamton’s seven-day disabled list yesterday after being on there since April 15th with an elbow strain. He was transferred back down to St. Lucie to get his first game action in almost two months.

Out of this group, it’s obvious to see that Montero (5-3, 3.08 ERA in AA this season) is the most advanced in his development. He’s currently knocking down the door of Triple-A, and his performance the rest of this season could land him a decent chance of earning a rotation spot for 2014.

When it comes to Mateo’s future, he has a fastball he can get into the mid-90s to go with a hard slider, but lacks a solid change-up, which could hinder him being a starter at the major league level. However, at the age of 22, he has plenty of time to try adding one to his repertoire.
