Mets third base prospect Blake Tiberi underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday in New York, Mets Minors learned. Tiberi was originally placed on the disabled list on April 11 with arm soreness, but returned to action with the Low-A Columbia Fireflies on April 24. After two games, Tiberi found himself back on the shelf and the procedure was scheduled.

“2018 will be mine!” he said in an Instagram post. “The road to recovery starts today. Thanks to my family and friends for the support.”

Although the Tommy John recovery timetable is shorter for position players, Tiberi is not expected to return in 2017.

The 22-year-old started the season hot, hitting safely in three of his first seven at-bats, but ended up 0-11 in his final three games. Tiberi was looking to bounce back from what can only be described as a rough professional debut, one that saw him hit .235/.316/.316 in 2016 with the Brooklyn Cyclones. The Mets’ third-round selection from Louisville also made a cameo in Major League spring training this year, going 1-4 in four games as a minor league call-up.

Tiberi becomes the second player in the Mets’ organization to need the surgery this season. RHP Witt Haggard underwent the procedure in April.
