Jupiter 2, St. Lucie 1

St. Lucie 4, Jupiter 1

The St. Lucie Mets did their best to mirror the parent club during their marathon series finale at Jupiter on Sunday. After being held to one run over the first 13 innings, the Mets plated three runs in the 14th, fueled by RBI singles from catcher Cam Maron and first baseman Robbie Shields, to capture a 4-1 victory and halt a five-game losing streak.

A lineup sprinkled with rehabbing major-league players didn’t seem to faze pitcher Matthew Bowman in his latest promising start. However, despite holding three batters from the Miami Marlins — Giancarlo Stanton, Donovan Solano and Joe Mahoney — hitless in eight at-bats, the crafty right-hander was saddled with a no-decision after lasting six innings.

The Mets lost the first contest of the day 2-1 in eight innings during the continuation of a suspended game from Saturday. St. Lucie (31-29) avoided losing six consecutive games for the first time this season, but still dropped to third place in the Florida State League South Division behind the Hammerheads.

The two teams waged another low-scoring battle in the second game as five different St. Lucie relievers held Jupiter without a run for the final 10 innings. Chasen Bradford recorded his third save of the season with a perfect 14th inning. Maron reached base five times, finishing 3-for-4 with two walks and a double. Shields was 2-for-6 and designated hitter Charley Thurber went 3-for-6 with a double and run scored.

After needing just 11 pitches in the first inning, Bowman (3-0) allowed the leadoff hitter to reach base in each of the following four innings but limited the damage and surrendered only one run on six hits over six steady innings. The 22-year-old, who was a shortstop in college, continues to show rapid development with the Advanced Single-A club and finished with four strikeouts and three walks — the first time he has walked multiple batters during his six-game tenure at St. Lucie.

The Mets failed to provide Bowman any support, however, and were held hitless by Jupiter starter Anthony DeSclafani over the first 4.1 innings before Thurber’s single in the fifth. St. Lucie had just three baserunners and whiffed nine times against DeSclafani, who departed the game after six shutout innings. They had a golden opportunity in the 10th inning when they loaded the bases with one out, but were unable to push a run across as Gilbert Gomez grounded into a double play — one of the team’s five on the night — to end the inning.

For the second straight weekend, the Mets dealt with soggy weather and were forced to play more than one game on Sunday. The jumbled schedule coupled with recent player promotions seem to have hurt their offense as it entered the finale combining for only two runs on six hits — all singles — during the first two games.

During the first game, a throwing error by shortstop Matt Reynolds in the eighth inning allowed the winning run to score and sent St. Lucie to its second straight one-run defeat. Starting pitcher Angel Cuan (5-1) earned a no-decision — the third time in his past five outings he’s failed to factor into the decision. He permitted just one run and five hits over five innings Saturday night to trim his ERA to 3.67, including a solid 2.10 mark on the road. Randy Fontanez (4-5) suffered the loss when play resumed Sunday.

Cuan upheld the stellar precision displayed by the Mets’ starters and struck out four batters, including Stanton twice, while walking none. He has issued just two walks over his past five starts (30 innings) to improve his season K/BB ratio to 43-to-6 in 10 games (eight starts). The club’s offense produced only three singles — two in the first inning alone — and went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Reynolds plated the only run with a base hit in the first to score Shields, his 27th RBI of the season.

St. Lucie travels to Clearwater on Monday for four games in the final series of the first half. The pitching rotation is expected to include: Noah Syndergaard (Monday), Alex Panteliodis (Tuesday), Rainy Lara (Wednesday) and Domingo Tapia (Thursday). Syndergaard, one of three players who will represent the Mets in Saturday’s FSL All-Star Game, is winless over his past four starts and owns an overall 2-3 record and 2.81 ERA.
