Brandon Nimmo Helps Sand Gnats Earn Split of Doubleheader

A double header between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Asheville Tourists was played in front of  1,875 fans Tuesday afternoon at Grayson Stadium. Both games went into extra innings; Asheville won the first game 4-3 in eight innings, while Savannah won the nightcap 1-0 in 11 innings.

In the first game, Savannah scored two runs in the first inning. Maiki De La Cruz singled, advanced to second on a balk, then advanced to third on a single by catcher Kevin Plawecki. De La Cruz finished his trek around the bases by scoring on a wild pitch. Left fielder Stefon Sabol tripled to score Plawecki. Savannah scored their third run in the second inning without a hit. Jeff Glenn walked and would eventually score on a balk.
Asheville scored three runs in the 6th inning. First baseman Derek Jones hit a solo home run over the right field fence. Shortstop Rosell Herrera doubled (he was 4-4), and scored on a single by Francisco SosaMatt Argyropoulos capped the scoring with a single to plate Sosa. The winning run scored for Asheville in the eighth inning, as Sosa walked, stole second, and then scored from there on a wild pitch.

With the score at 0-0 in the 11th inning in the second game, Savannah had the bases loaded with two outs and center fielder Brandon Nimmo at the plate. Nimmo fouled off about 10 pitches before drawing a walk to score the winning run. Asheville starter Matt Fleming was brilliant, allowing only two hits over 7 2/3 shutout inningsl allowing one walk, and striking out six. Savannah starter Logan Taylor was effective, pitching six shutout innings, allowing four hits, three walks, and six strikeouts. Reliever Paul Sewald allowed one hit in three innings pitched, with four strikeouts. Brett Mitchell (won, 2-2) gave up one hit in two innings of work, with two strikeouts.

The final game of the series starts at 7:05 pm Wednesday evening at Grayson  Stadium.
