Brandon Nimmo, the 2011 first round pick for the Mets in the MLB draft, was up against four other minor leaguers in a final vote to see who would occupy the final roster spot on the USA Futures Game roster. Mets fans have successfully voted Nimmo into the Futures Game, which is set to take place on July 14th at Citi Field. The Savannah Sand Gnats outfielder joins pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero as the other two representatives from the Mets organization.
In 52 games (202 at-bats) in the Savannah League, Nimmo is hitting .277/.378/.371 with one home run, 22 RBIs, six doubles, and five triples. He had a great month of April to start the season (.322/.421/.433), but has since cooled off because of injuries and a recent slump. In yesterday’s victory at Rome, Nimmo went 3-for-5 with a run scored, the first time he’s recorded more than one hit in a game in the last week and a half. Hopefully, he’s getting hot at the right time.
Congratulations to Brandon on getting voted into the game! And a great job to the Mets fan base for voting him in so the home crowd can see him in Flushing in a couple weeks.
Now we just have to make sure David Wright keeps a hold on the starting third base spot for the National League All-Stars. Voting ends on Thursday, and you can vote for Wright here: 2013 MLB All-Star game ballot.
Great news for Brandon. I’m not sure he deserved it, but who cares.
Is there anyone outside of NYC who would rather see Nimmo in this game then the runner-up, Garin Cecchini, who hit .350 / .469 / .547 in high-A, and is at .366 / .490 / .537 in his first 11 games in AA, and who has probably been the second-best hitter, among prospects, in the entire minors (after Miguel Sano)? No, of course not.
Thanks, Mets organization and fans, for making the game decidedly less interesting for the fans of the other 29 teams (who almost certainly voted for Cecchini by a huge margin). Why not just have an all-Mets farmhand game? That would make it *really* gratifying for the home crowd!
