The Brooklyn Cyclones have announced that former Mets great and last year’s bench coach Edgardo Alfonzo will be their new manager for the 2017 season.

Fonzie will become the 11th manager in Cyclones history as they look to make the playoffs for the first time since 2012.

Alfonzo is part of a minor shake-up of the Cyclones staff that was precipitated by the retirement of former Cyclones manager Tom Gamboa. The new pitching coach will be former Mets reliever Royce Ring. Former Mets minor league Sean Ratliff will return in his role as hitting coach for the Cyclones.

Alfonzo played eight years for the Mets hitting .292/.367/.445 with 120 homers and 538 RBI. This will be Alonzo’s first year as a manager for any Mets minor league affiliate and his fourth season serving on the Cyclones coaching staff.

Ring was acquired by the Mets in 2003 that sent Roberto Alomar to the Chicago White Sox. In his two years with the Mets, Ring made 26 appearances going 0-2 with a 3.47 ERA and a 1.286 WHIP. This will be his first season as the pitching coach for the Cyclones. Previously, he served as the pitching coach for the Gulf Coat Mets (2014-2015) and the Kingsport Mets (2016).

Ratliff was the Mets fourth round selection in the 2008 draft. His career was cut short in 2012 when he was struck in the face by a foul ball. This will be his second season as the Cyclones hitting coach and his third as a hitting coach in the Mets organization.
