On the eve of the 2018 season, the New York Mets were able to land former first round pick Bryce Brentz off waivers.  Brentz promised to give the Mets some much needed organizational outfield depth.

With Brentz hitting .271/.334/.529 with 31 homers and 85 RBI last season for the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox, there was some excitement as to what type of numbers he could put up in both a hitter’s league and hitter’s ballpark. Unfortunately, Brentz did not really show off the type of bat many were expecting over the first 12 games of the season with him hitting .178/.224/.267.

Last night, in Las Vegas’ blowout victory over the Fresno Grizzlies, Brentz would finally have that breakout game many have been waiting for him to have.

Brentz was the one who got things rolling hitting a second inning two-run homer off Fresno starter Rogelio Armenteros, who is the Houston Astros 12th best prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

In the third, Brentz would get to Armenteros again. With runners on first and second with one out, Brentz hit a double into left scoring Dominic Smith.

In total, Brentz was 2-for-3 with two runs, a double, homer, and two RBI. It was his second straight game with a home run and third straight game driving in two runs.

With this game, it appears as if Brentz has shaken off the early season rust, and he is ready to put together the big offensive season many expected from him when the Mets claimed him off waivers.
