After the draft, Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline named five players from the 2018 draft he believes could be the first player to make their Major League debut. Coming in at number two was Mets fifth round pick Ryley Gilliam.

In his assessment, Callis noted Gilliam was a dominant collegiate reliever:

Another reliever who dominated college hitters this spring, Gilliam is a small guy with a quick arm that produces one of the better curveballs in this Draft, not to mention 91-96 mph fastballs. The Clemson product has an up-tempo delivery with some funkiness that adds deception, though it also can hamper his command at times.

Of the five players mentioned by Callis, three of them were first round draft picks with Gilliam being the lowest round draft pick mentioned.
