Rome 3, Savannah 2

Right fielder Felix Marte, the Rome Braves’ No. 9 batter, drove in two runs and had two of the team’s nine hits Wednesday night in a 3-2 victory over the Savannah Sand Gnats.

The offensive woes continued for Savannah (68-49 overall, 25-23 second half of the Class A South Atlantic League). The Gnats have lost three straight games, all by one run. They were outhit 7-4 in a 2-1 home defeat Sunday to the Hickory Crawdads, and matched Rome with four hits in a 2-1 loss Tuesday night. They had five hits on Wednesday.

Rome (61-60, 25-27) led 2-0 in the second inning on Daniel Carroll’s two-out single, Marte’s RBI-double to left and leadoff batter Kyle Wren’s RBI-single off Savannah starter Marcos Camarena (5-2, 2.66 ERA).

Savannah responded in the third on No. 9 batter Dimas Ponce’s one-out single, starting pitcher Jason Hursh’s wild pitch, catcher Casey Kalenkosky’s passed ball and another wild pitch.

The game was tied in the top of the fourth. Rome’s Jose Lugo (1-0, 4.05 ERA) relieved Hursh and gave up Eudy Pina’s one-out triple to left. With two outs, Jeff Reynolds singled to left to drive in Pina.

Rome, however, came right back to lead 3-2. Kalenkosky opened with a double to center and went to third base on groundout.

Kalenkosky was out at home on a fielder’s choice, but batter Carroll advanced all the way to second base. Carroll scored when on Marte’s single to right.

Eric Pfisterer replaced Lugo in the sixth and went the rest of the way without allowing a hit or run for his second save.
