ph_448614UPDATE:

Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors provided another update on a potential opt-out from Carlos Torres. It’s reported that Torres will remain in the starting rotation with the Las Vegas 51s, but is allowed to speak with other teams about a possible spot on their respective 25-man rosters.

If a team comes calling, the Mets will then have 48 hours to promote Torres to the big leagues (which would be unlikely), or he can become a free agent. Dierkes mentions some NL West teams have some interest. I would assume the Giants are among one of those teams.

TUESDAY, 10:31 AM:

Carlos Torres continues to get accolades for his dominant week with the Las Vegas 51s. After being named the MMN Pitcher of the Week yesterday, he was also named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week.

I’m not going to repeat all of the statistics I threw at you yesterday, but his line between two starts last week are worth repeating: 18 innings pitched, one run, five hits, no walks, and 15 strikeouts. He earned the wins in both of those appearances, which included two separate complete game efforts.

Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors reported last night Torres has an opt-out clause in his contract with the Mets, and he could exercise that right tomorrow. After spending the 2012 season in the Colorado Rockies bullpen, he signed a minor league contract with New York this past November. He’s been working exclusively in the starting rotation, and currently owns a 6-3 record with a 3.89 ERA, 67 strikeouts, and 19 walks in 71.2 innings pitched.

Torres is having a hot streak at the right time, as he’s allowed only three earned runs in his last 32 innings pitched. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Torres opt out of his contract and look elsewhere for a job in the big leagues. Zack Wheeler is getting promoted any day now, meaning Dillon Gee or Jeremy Hefner would have to move to the bullpen. Collin McHugh has already been promoted once, so there are other options for the Mets to choose to fill an open rotation spot instead of the 30-year-old right-hander.
