After a hot week in Savannah, Gavin Cecchini joins the list of Mets Prospects that have reached Baseball America’s hot sheet, after last week’s appearances by Brandon Nimmo and Noah Syndergaard. After a torrid week full of extra-base hits, Cecchini torched the competition and has put himself into a higher prospect status by hitting .286 with 13 extra base hits thus far this year. This is what BA had to say on Cecchini’s hot week.
4. Gavin Cecchini, SS, Mets
Team: low Class A Savannah (South Atlantic)
Age: 20
Why He’s Here: .458/.462/.875 (11-for-24), 5 R, 3 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 6 RBIs, 1 BB, 2 SO, 0-for-1 SBThe Scoop: Raise your hand if you saw this one coming. Cecchini, whom the Mets drafted 12th overall out of high school in 2012, ranks third among SAL shortstops with a .168 isolated slugging percentage—behind only 2013 college drafts JaCoby Jones (Pirates) and Pat Valaika (Rockies). This despite Cecchini playing half his games in the hitter’s graveyard that is Savannah and despite entering the season with a career .318 slugging percentage in short-season ball. Fully healthy this season, he’s showing off a rounded tool set that includes feel for the barrel, solid wheels and a strong defensive game.
Also, Wilmer Flores, who has been recently called up to the Major Leagues to play shortstop was in the team photo this time:
Wilmer Flores, ss, Mets. By going 11-for-22 (.500) with four homers, two doubles and 11 RBIs this week at Triple-A Las Vegas, Flores made the Mets’ decision to scuttle shortstop Ruben Tejada an easy one. The 22-year-old Flores will take over as big league shortstop after hitting .307/.360/.500 in 29 games on the farm this season.
By the statistics, it looks as though Flores should have been included on this hot list with Cecchini. Either way, Congratulations to Wilmer Flores and Gavin Cecchini for their inclusion to the Baseball America hot sheet this week, and we hope they continue this torrid pace in their respective teams.
With the play where getting out of Flores, tovar, Reynolds + Cecchini it looks like SS may not be such a pressing need. Also we have Rosario who looks to have the highest ceiling. Cecchini has developed faster than expected. It’s not hard to imagine him filling the gaps at Cityfield. Tovar looks like he could hit for a decent average and has a ++ glove. Reynolds is a very polished hitter and is coming fast after really struggling last season. Flores I’m very excited to see on the mets n think he can keep the job if he gets his throwing to become 2nd nature. He has a great arm so I don’t see why it can’t happen.
