The qualifying tournament for the last spot in the 2017 World Baseball Classic started on Thursday at MCU Park in Brooklyn with Brazil and Israel getting victories on the first day.

Brazil beat Pakistan 10-0 in the first game of tournament with the big story being 15-year old pitcher Eric Pardinho hitting 94 MPH on the gun. The Barry Larkin led Brazilian team will now play Israel on Friday in the winners bracket.

Team Israel came into the bottom of the 7th inning trailing 2-1 before they scored four runs to take the lead that the bullpen would make hold. Ike Davis had a pinch hit RBI single in the middle of the rally and finished 1 for 2 off the bench for Israel. Fellow former Met Josh Satin started at second base for Israel but went 0 for 3 and was hit by a pitch.

Jason Marquis went three innings as the starter for Israel before turning it over to current Mets farmhand Josh Zeid who went 3.2 innings allowing one run on two hits (both to Champ Stuart) and struck out six. Former big leaguer Craig Breslow got the win for Israel.

Mets prospect Champ Stuart played center field and batted fourth for the Great Britain squad. He had himself quite a night going 3 for 4 with two doubles, a stolen base as well as scoring both of Britain’s runs. Stuart hit a single and double off his Binghamton Mets teammate Josh Zeid. Mets pitching prospect Blake Taylor is also on the Great Britain team.

Great Britain will play today against Pakistan in an elimination game.
