One thing that we tend to forget with prospects is that their development is not always linear. Each prospect is unique, and over time, will develop their own development path. With him being in his fifth year in the Mets organization, Champ Stuart has definitively developed his own unique pattern.
Beginning with this stint in St. Lucie, the 2013 draft pick has struggled when he gets moved up a level. After some time where he has learned to adapt and improve his game, he once again begins to show the Mets why they drafted him in the first place. Last year, Stuart performed well in St. Lucie prompting the team to send him up to Double-A Binghamton where he predictably struggled hitting just .201/.264/.261 in 43 games.
Stuart was assigned to Binghamton to begin the seasons, and once again he is beginning to figure things out. Over his last four games, Stuart is hitting .455/.519/.909 with two doubles, a triple, two home runs, 5 RBI, six runs, and five stolen bases. Naturally, after a week like that, Stuart was named the Eastern League Player of the Week. More than that, Stuart has looked like an immensely talented five tool player who could one day play in the major leagues.
Given Stuart’s continuing this pattern, it is hard to argue he doesn’t have a realistic shot at making the majors even if it is as a late inning defensive replacement or pinch runner. If given that chance, it is quite possible he could develop into more than that just like he has done in St. Lucie and now in Binghamton.
Can he be Lagares with more speed? Possibly.
Career .227 hitter. Still along way to go on the “hit” tool.
He could be Lagares with more speed and Pop. I really hope he gets his OBP up because he could be a real fun player for the Mets. With Grandy and Bruce gone next year and if they don’t acquire any OF in off season, I think Nimmo/Lagares Platoon is a possibility with Champ being 5th OF/Pinch runner specialist. I’m optimistic that Nimmo can put it together to be a decent regular
Just hit the ball on the ground and slap it around the yard, work on cutting the Ks and tuning up that eye for getting on base. Most intriguing is his career 88% success rate on SBs.
