Yesterday’s starting scheduled starting pitcher, Chris Flexen missed his first scheduled Spring start. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports Flexen missed the start due to a sore knee.

Last year, Flexen was 10-9 with a 3.56 ERA and a 1.313 WHIP in 25 starts for St. Lucie in his first full season after having had Tommy John surgery. Flexen has promise with a fastball that can get into the mid 90s and a good curve ball. Despite his control problems, and the lack of a third pitch, the Mets added Flexen to the 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft.

At this time, it is not known how serious the knee issue is or if Flexen will need to miss additional starts this spring. Non-roster invitee Paul Sewald made the start in his place in what was a 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers.

It should also be noted Fernando Salas was scheduled to pitch yesterday, but he did not make an appearance. As there have been no reports regarding Salas’ health, it appears his not making an appearance was a manager’s decision.
