Mets 2016 draft pick and Kingsport right-handed pitcher Chris Viall underwent surgery to reposition the ulnar nerve in his right elbow. The same surgery that Jacob deGrom had last month.
Per Viall’s Instagram, he is “looking forward to a (hopefully) speedy recovery and to be back for most of Spring Training.”
The sixth round pick pitched in nine games with six starts for Kingsport in his pro debut going 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA and 1.75 WHIP. The tall fireballer did strike out 27 batters but also walked 17 in his first 20 innings as a professional.
Here is hoping for the best for Viall on a speedy recovery.
Hopefully this will help him be more consistent with his delivery and release point
I hope it helps, but I still think the biggest issue is just that big guys generally have trouble finding consistency in their mechanics. Hopefully with them fixing issue and some time in XST he’ll have much better mechanics and be ready to dominate with his great stuff.
Mechanics are definitely an issue for taller pitchers, but I am sure there was some adjustments based on comfort level with the injury
