On Sunday Night, New York Mets pitching prospect Christian James took a huge jump from Kingsport to the mound in Binghamton, New York.

Going from Rookie Ball to Double-A is substantial three level jump especially for a just turned 20-year-old pitcher with only 69 professional innings to his name.

James, a 14th round pick in 2016 out of high school, had a 3.26 ERA in his first two seasons combined between the GCL Mets and Kingsport Mets. James was selected out of East Lake High School, just outside of Tampa, Florida.

At  6’4”, the right-handed prospect usually sits in the 91-93 to go along with his change, curve, and a tight slider. Christian ranked as the 30th best high school baseball player in Florida in 2016, the ninth best right-handed pitcher.

James made his Double-A debut against the Bowie Baysox on Sunday, going four innings while allowing one run on three hits, one walk and struck out four. All three of Bowie’s hits off James were singles and he retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced.

The young righty threw 53 pitches with 35 of them coming for strikes. He also induced six groundball outs and showed off an impressive slider that he used for a couple of his strikeouts.

With his success on Sunday and the shuffling of the rosters through the Mets minor league and major league roster currently, it’s possible that we see more of James in full season ball.

James earned himself the start with a strong minor league spring, and he entered the season as our No. 27 prospect though that ranking is sure to rise with more outings like Sunday night.
