Binghamton 6, Erie 1

Cory Vaughn drove in four runs and Mark Cohoon allowed one run over six innings to lead the Binghamton Mets past the Erie SeaWolves, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park. Binghamton collected nine hits and three B-Mets pitchers shutout the SeaWolves over the final eight innings en route to the rubber match victory.

For the first time in the series, the Curve jumped on the board first. Eugenio Suarez started the opening inning by banging a double off the left-field wall against Cohoon. Ramon Cabrera put the home team up with an RBI groundout to second.

Binghamton erased the deficit and took the lead in the third against Erie starter Ramon Garcia. With Danny Muno breaking from first base, Vaughn launched a payoff pitch over the left field wall. Vaughn’s blast, his third since returning from the disabled list on August 5, gave the B-Mets a 2-1 advantage. Travis Taijeron padded Binghamton’s lead by ripping a solo homer off the arena in left field in the sixth inning.

Cohoon sailed through four shutout innings before facing his biggest challenge in the sixth. Ramon Cabrera reached with two outs on an infield single to short and Cohoon hit Tyler Collins and walked James McCann to load the bases. The southpaw pitched himself out of trouble, inducing Wade Gaynor to bounce back to the mound to end the inning.

The B-Mets put the game out of reach with a three-run seventh. Tovar scampered to second when Fields dropped his fly ball in shallow center. Justin Souza took the reins from Garcia and walked Muno before surrendering an RBI double to Josh Rodriguez. Vaughn capped the inning by lacing a two-run single to right-centerfield.

Chasen Bradford silenced the SeaWolves with two perfect innings of relief and Adam Kolarek shut the door with a quiet ninth securing Binghamton’s 22nd series win of the season.

Cohoon (8-3) struck out three while allowing one run on five hits in his fourth win in as many starts. Garcia (0-3) was tagged for four runs (three earned) over 6-1/3 innings in the loss.

The B-Mets (75-46) enjoy their final off day of the regular season on Monday before starting a three-game series against the Reading Fightin Phils on Tuesday at 7:05 PM. RHP Erik Goeddel takes the mound for the B-Mets against LHP Jesse Biddle.
