The Mets did some minor league housekeeping this week releasing 14 players in their system with the biggest name being Las Vegas 51’s outfielder Cory Vaughn. The Mets selected Cory in the 4th round of the 2010 draft and were excited about his pedigree being the son of former big leaguer Greg Vaughn.

Vaughn started his Mets career off with a tremendous year for the Brooklyn Cyclones hitting .307/.396/.557 with 12 stolen bases and 33 extra base hits. After a mediocre season in 2011 he bounced back to hit 23 homeruns and 21 steals for the St. Lucie Mets. He has struggled mightily the last two years though putting up a .691 OPS in AA and .686 OPS in Las Vegas.

Cory was a midseason All-Star for Brooklyn in 2010, Savannah in 2011 and St. Lucie for the 2012 season.

Another notable name is lefty reliever Adam Kolarek who was great in 2013 and started opening some Mets front office eyes thinking he could be a loogy in the not-so-distant future. For the Binghamton Mets that year he pitched to a 1.75 ERA while striking out 63 in 63 innings and held opponents to a .204 average.

Adam repeated AA last year and got knocked around to a 6.07 ERA and 1.74 WHIP. Over the offseason he decided to drop his arm angle ala Pedro Feliciano and it worked vs. lefties (0.78 WHIP) but righties hit him hard (1.73 WHIP). Overall this year 4.43 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 51 games for the B’Mets.

The Mets also released 2012 4th round pick Branden Kaupe who hit .201/.331/.233 in four Minor League seasons. Here is the list of the other 11 players that were released: Jeff Glenn, Julian Hilario, Manuel Hilario, Zach Mathieu, Anthony Chavez, Leon Canelon, Ruben Reyes, Oswald Caraballo, William Fulmer, Jose Figueroa, and Alvin Maracaro.
