Binghamton Mets outfielder Cory Vaughn is one of six players recently nominated for the Arizona Fall League’s annual Stenson award.

Each year, every AFL manager selects a player from his squad to nominate for the award. All nine former award winners have gone on to play in the big leagues and last years recipient, Cole Kimball, is now with the Washington Nationals.

According to an announcement made by MLB.com “The Dernell Stenson Sportsmanship Award pays tribute to the former Reds big league outfielder who was murdered while playing in the AFL after the 2003 season. It’s given to a player who exemplifies Stenson’s unselfishness, hard work and leadership.”cory vaughn gd

The award focuses more of the character of the player rather than solely on skill. As a result, this award doesn’t mean much in terms of prospect status, but it still serves as a recognition of the strong personal characteristics key to any team leader.

The five other players nominated were Andy Burns (3B, Salt River Rafters), Garin Cecchini (3B, Surprise Saguaros), Travis Mattair (corner infield, Glendale Desert Dogs), Jonathan Meyer (3B, Peoria Javelinas) and Devon Travis (2B, Mesa Solar Sox).

As mentioned yesterday, Vaughn has been performing well in the AFL, hitting .262/.333/.393, with 22 hits, one home run, three triples and eight stolen bases for the Scottsdale Scorpions. With an RBI double last night, Vaughn increased his hit streak to six games, making successful contact in eight of the last ten games.
