Aberdeen 5, Brooklyn 1

The Cyclones ran into a one-man buzz saw on Thursday evening as Hector Veloz hit two home runs and had four RBI for Aberdeen as the IronBirds defeated Brooklyn 5-1. Brooklyn starter Seth Lugo (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs, all earned, on five hits over his five innings of work.

After a scoreless first inning, the IronBirds opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Veloz led off the frame with a solo shot to give Aberdeen the 1-0 advantage. In the fourth inning, the 19-year-old from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic lit up the scoreboard again with his second round tripper of the game, and his fourth of the season, this time a three-run shot to push the IronBirds advantage to 4-0.

In the fifth inning, Brooklyn mounted their only offensive rally of the evening whenJames Roche and Tomas Nido connected on back-to-back doubles to push across the lone run of the game for the Cyclones. Brooklyn went quietly the rest of the way, never getting a runner beyond second base.

The IronBirds tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of a Jeff Kemp RBI single to make the final score 5-1. With the loss, the Cyclones have now dropped four straight decisions to Aberdeen.

The Cyclones will look to rebound on Friday evening when they take on Aberdeen in the middle game of a three-game set at Ripken Stadium. Brooklyn will send LHP Dario Alvarez (0-1) to the mound. The Cyclones will return to Coney Island on Sunday to open a three-game series against the Lowell Spinners at 5:00 PM.
