Mets pitching prospect David Peterson put together another strong start for the Columbia Fireflies on Sunday, pitching 6 2/3 innings while striking out seven against the Greenville Drive.

He allowed seven hits and two earned runs, raising his earned run average to 2.03 for the season.

Peterson, the 20th overall pick by the Mets in 2017, has now gone at least 6 2/3 innings in each of his last four starts. He continues to go deep into games while holding opponents to only a .213 batting average.

Last year, Peterson only pitched 3 2/3 innings with the Brooklyn Cyclones before his season was cut short with a toe injury. This year, the Mets eased Peterson into the season after sending him to extended spring training. The left-handed pitcher from Denver, Colorado, is showing the Mets why he was worthy of a first round pick.

The former Oregon Duck was originally drafted by Boston in 2014, but he elected to attend college instead of signing with the Red Sox. During his college career, the 6-foot-6-inch Peterson racked up 273 strikeouts in 256 2/3 innings. In his senior season with the Ducks, Peterson finished 11-4 with a 2.52 ERA, prompting the Mets to select him in the first round.

Peterson, 22, has allowed 34 hits and only one home run in 44 2/3 innings this season. He is currently ranked as our No. 2 prospect in the Mets system behind only trailing St. Lucie shortstop Andres Gimenez.
