David Peterson was taken 20th overall in the first round by the New York Mets in the 2017 MLB Draft. There are high expectations for being a first-round pick and he’s fulfilling them to start the 2018 season.

After a brief stint with the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2017, Peterson is succeeding at Columbia. Coming into today, Peterson had a 1-0 record with a 2.28 ERA through four starts. He had 21 strikeouts in 23.2 innings with eight walks.

On Monday night, the 22-year-old Peterson pitched really well as the Columbia Fireflies lost 1-0 to the Delmarva Shorebirds. Peterson only allowed two hits in seven innings of one-run ball throwing 94 pitches and 62 of them for strikes.

The tall lefty had three walks and four strikeouts and got tagged with the tough luck loss as the Fireflies’ offense mustered only two hits. The run was given up in the first inning on a groundout to the first baseman. This was set up by a walk to the leadoff batter, followed by a stolen base, a groundout that advanced the runner, and then the groundout to drive in the run.

This outing follows the best start of his pro career when he struck out eight in seven scoreless innings on May 7.

Peterson now has a 1-1 record with a 2.05 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and is holding opponents to a .202 average while striking out 25 in 30.2 innings. Peterson has now allowed only one run in his last 19 innings.
