MMN‘s Jacob Resnick resports Las Vegas 51s third baseman David Thompson has suffered a hairline fracture in his left hand, and he is going to be placed on the seven day disabled list. At the moment, there is no timetable for his possible return.

For a from of reference, it was not long ago Mets catcher Kevin Plawecki was diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his hand after he was hit by a pitch. Initially, it was reported he would be out three to four weeks, but recent indications have been Plawecki is not close to returning. While possibly illustrative, it needs to be cautioned the severity of the respective injuries are unknown.

Thompson had largely struggled this season hitting .258/.329/.379 with five doubles, a homer, and five RBi in 22 games. At the moment, it is not known how long Thompson has been dealing with the broken hand, so we cannot reasonably ascertain what impact it has had on a player many believe had taken a big step forward after a strong season in Double-A and the Arizona Fall League.

In Thompson’s absence, it will be interesting to see how the team distributes playing time at third. So far this season, Ty Kelly, Phillip Evans, and Gavin Cecchini have already played at least one game at the position.
