Mets minor league infielder David Thompson has been named as the 2018 recipient of the John J. Murphy Award, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. The award, named after the late general manager of the 1969 Miracle Mets, is given annually to the top Mets rookie in Spring Training. The 2017 Murphy Award was delivered to Amed Rosario.

Thompson, the Mets’ fourth-round draft choice in 2015, posted solid numbers across the board in March as a non-roster invitee. In 16 games before being reassigned to minor league camp, he hit .348/.464/.391, walking four times and stealing three bases. Expected to begin the minor league season with Triple-A Las Vegas, Thompson has hit .261 with 30 home runs and 185 RBI across three seasons.

Current members of the Mets’ roster who have previously won the Murphy Award include Rosario, Travis d’Arnaud (2013), and Jose Reyes (2002). The last pitcher to win the award was Josh Edgin (2012).
