Tucson 5, Las Vegas 2

Jacob deGrom was rushed up to AAA to make a spot start for the 51s last night — and it was because Carlos Torres and Zack Wheeler were with the MLB team while Collin McHugh was on his way to Colorado. Happy trails, Collin…you’re an awesome guy.

DeGrom did his best to show that he belonged in AAA, allowing just one earned run over the first five-and-two-thirds innings pitched. Burch Smith‘s two-out RBI single in the second was the only real damage against him, after a Juan Centeno RBI single gave the 51s the lead earlier in the inning.

The 51s would strike again for a run with an RBi single by none other than Ike Davis in the sixth, but Tucson would greet Justin Hampson with back-to-back doubles when he entered the ball game to tie it up once again.

It wasn’t till the eighth inning when Greg Burke served up a two-run triple to Dean Anna and a sacrifice fly subsequently that this game really felt out of reach. The score at that point was 5 – 2 which went on to be our final result.

The battery of deGrom and Juan Centeno combined to make Tucson 0-for-4 on base stealing attempts this game — so kudos to Centeno. If the 51s are keeping the same schedule, Matt Fox should start for them tomorrow as they continue their series against Tucson.
