Brooklyn 3, Batavia 0

Miller Diazwas phenomenal in a 3-0 win over the Batavia Muckdogs on Saturday, and could have had an even better performance had his innings not been cut short due to a rain delay. There were two separate rain delays, both lasting just over an hour.

Diaz tied his season high in strike outs by the end of the fourth inning with eight and didn’t allow a hit until the top of the fifth inning. He struck out one more in the top of the fifth inning for his season high ninth strike out. Along with his nine strike outs, Diazallowed no runs, two hits, and one walk to lower his ERA to 2.37.

The Cyclones came out swinging against Batavia starter, Helpi Reyes, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Patrick Biondi started the rally with a double down the left field line, and Justin Turner followed with a walk. A wild pitch by Reyes movedBiondi and Turner to second and third. L.J. Mazzilli did his job by driving in Biondifor the game’s first run of the game on a groundball out to the shortstop. Mazzilli has at least one RBI in four of his last five games. Turner scored on an RBI double into center field by Jared King. Matt Oberste kept the inning going with an RBI single to left field, giving the Cyclones an early 3-0 lead at the end of one.

Both Biondi and King finished with multi-hit games. King was 3-4 on the day and extends his hitting streak to five games. Over that five game span King is batting .500 (8-16). In his second game with the Cyclones as part of his rehab assignment, Turnerwas 0-2 with a walk and run scored. Turner was replaced by Ismael Tijerina after the second rain delay. Mazzilli went 0-4 to put an end to his nine game hit streak.

Coming in relief for the Cyclones, Ricky Knapp and Tim Peterson combined for three innings of shutout ball, setting up John Mincone for the save opportunity. Minconerecorded his fifth save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth to secure the Cyclones win.
