Right-hander Domingo Tapia has signed a minor league deal with the Cincinnati Reds according to Baseball America.
Tapia, 25, made 20 appearances between the Binghamton Mets and St. Lucie Mets during the 2016 season. He went 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.68 WHIP in 30.2 innings.
Tapia had Tommy John Surgery in May of 2015 and threw only 1.2 innings that season. He went 25-34 with a 4.83 ERA and 1.366 WHIP in 465.2 innings over seven seasons in the Mets minor league system.
Other Mets minor league free agents that have left the organization this offseason are Derrik Gibson (Colorado Rockies), Eric Campbell (Hanshin Tigers, Japan) and Roger Bernadina (Kia Tigers, Korea).
Darn, was really hoping we would bring him back. Had one of the best fastball I’d ever seen prior to his surgery and I hoped he could get back close to that. He could’ve been a good part of our pen in the future.
Mothered was a time that Familia and Tapia were the next big thing for the Mets. Both threw high 90’s with some control issues. Now however, while Familia has harnessed his stuff, Tapia still struggles with throwing strikes.

Never understood how Tapua threw so hard and couldn’t pile up the strikeouts.
I know Mets tend to convert starters to relievers closer to the show, but Tapia should have been converted much earlier- may have saved some wear and tear on his arm.
Agreed that they stayed with Tapia too long as a starter, similarly with Reyes and Lara, both should be full time relievers already.
I wish they had moved Tapia to the bullpen sooner.
Michael, do you think they kept him as a starter to give him more chances to throw? As I understand, only when your stamina can’t handle it do they put you in the bullpen.

He was a part of the vaunted Tapia/Morris/Urbina trio back in short season ball. Now all three are out of the organization.
